New dMAT Test for Study in Germany Dates, Fees, Pattern, and Exemptions Explained
The rules for studying a Master’s degree in Germany just went through a massive shift. APS India, in coordination with g.a.s.t. (the official body behind TestDaF and TestAS), has officially introduced the (digital Master Test) dMAT Test Germany.
If you are an Indian student planning your higher education journey to Germany, there is a lot of misinformation spreading online causing unnecessary panic. At Abroad Study Rover, our core philosophy is total transparency and truth-telling. Let’s break down exactly what the dMAT is, who actually needs to write it, and how it impacts your application process.
What is the dMAT Test?
The dMAT (digital Master Test) is a standardized, computer-based cognitive assessment designed specifically for Indian academic applicants. It does not test your memory, formulas, or textbook engineering theories. Instead, it measures your logical thinking, data interpretation, and analytical problem-solving capabilities.
German public and private universities are using this test to establish a uniform standard for evaluating the academic readiness of international applicants.
Who Must Take the dMAT? (Check Your Eligibility)
The dMAT is being rolled out in a phased manner. You are only required to take the dMAT test germany if your profile meets all of the following conditions:
Your Target Degree: You are applying for a Master’s degree (Bachelor’s applicants are completely exempt).
Your Academic Stream: Your Bachelor’s degree falls under Engineering/IT/Computer Science or Commerce/Finance/Management/Economics streams.
Your Intake Timeline: You are targeting the Summer Semester 2027 intake or later.
Your APS Timeline: You registered for your APS verification on or after June 29, 2026.
Who is Completely Exempt?
You do not need to write the dMAT test if:
You already possess a physical, issued APS Certificate.
You applied for your APS certificate before June 29, 2026.
You are applying for the Winter 2026 intake.
Your degree stream is in the Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences.
Important Dates & Fees for the First Sitting
If you fall into the category that requires the dMAT test germany, you must adhere to a strict registration timeline managed directly by g.a.s.t.:
Registration Window: June 29, 2026, to September 15, 2026.
Official Test Date: September 26, 2026.
Results Declaration: October 12, 2026.
The Test Fee: €150 (Approximately ₹16,300), payable directly to g.a.s.t. during registration. Note: This is separate from your standard APS India verification fees.
How the dMAT Test Integrates with the APS Process
It is vital to understand that the dMAT test does not replace your APS document verification. It acts as an additional layer.
You must first register for the dMAT test germany on the g.a.s.t. portal and sit for the exam at an approved physical testing center in India.
Once your digital certificate is issued on October 12th, you will submit this dMAT score sheet alongside your standard transcripts to APS India.
Your final APS certificate will explicitly feature your dMAT Test score, which German universities will look at during your admissions process.
⚠️ Crucial Truth Check: There is no “Pass” or “Fail” cut-off score for the dMAT. A low score cannot get your APS certificate rejected. It simply gives universities a clearer picture of your aptitude.
Structure of the Exam
The exam lasts 3.5 hours and is conducted entirely in English. All questions are multiple-choice and split into two major sections:
- The Core Test: Evaluates broad mental capabilities, logic, and quantitative thinking.
- Subject-Specific Module: Tailored to either Engineering or Economics/Management, focusing on analyzing diagrams, recognizing patterns, and solving system-based problems.
